Music Theory On Line

Theoretical versus Practical

When studying "theory" of "whatever" subject, there are times that theory steps out of the boundaries of what is practical. Some "theoretical" scientist might say that a perpetual motion machine is possible. In practice such a machine has not yet been produced.

In the study of music theory, there will be times that a "theoretical" situation will be presented. For example, the 4th note of the F flat major scale is B double-flat. However, it is in reality, unfeasible to use an F flat major scale (E works much better). Each time this course mentions "theoretical" items it will be pointed out that the item is "theoretical". More emphasis will be placed on the practical.
