Music Theory On Line

Introduction

Today's lesson is about clefs. A clef sign is the musical notation device that is placed on the staff to define what pitch will be found on what line or space. Many of the devices in music can be thought of as being a secret code.

Once a musician learns the secret code, many opportunities are then available. This code is not, however, really secret. The musical code is the same world wide. Lots of people know and understand the code. A music theorist knows and understands the code, but also understands "why".

There are several different types of clefs and today's lesson will mention all of the types of clefs that are being used in modern times. Some students will have experience with some clefs and not others. That is okay. Hopefully all music theory students will eventually be equally familiar with all clefs.
