Music Theory On Line

Musical Alphabet

The musical alphabet contains only 7 letters. Those 7 letters are A, B, C, D, E, F, and G.

These letters are called the "name" of a note. Later we will learn about note "types".

The name of a note (the 7 letters) is a different item than the "type" of note. There are more than just 7 different notes.

More note names will be presented later - for example, B flat. For right now - A, B, C, D, E, F, and G are the names of notes that are found on the musical staff.

It is an important part of music theory for the student to know the names of the notes.
