Music Theory On Line

G Clef

A clef sign indicates the note name of one particular line or space. The reason that the treble clef is also referred to as the "G clef" is that the clef sign seems to encircle the second line.

The name of the note on the second line is G. If the second line note name is G and the note names are sequential (alphabetical order), then the names of the other lines and spaces can be determined.

The name of the note just above G is the note A. Remember that the musical alphabet is continuos. It is possible to "stair-step" up and down across lines or spaces in alphabetical or reverse alphabetical order.
